5 Warning Signs You Need a Root Canal

Understanding when tooth pain means something more serious — and why waiting can cost you your tooth.

Tooth pain is easy to ignore — until it isn't. Many patients wait weeks or months hoping discomfort will pass on its own, only to find the infection has spread deeper into the tooth. Catching the signs early can mean the difference between a simple root canal and losing the tooth altogether.

1. Persistent or Throbbing Pain

Pain that lingers for more than a day or two, especially a deep, throbbing ache, often signals inflammation or infection inside the tooth's pulp.

2. Sensitivity to Hot or Cold That Lingers

Brief sensitivity is normal. But if hot tea or ice water leaves your tooth aching for 30 seconds or longer after, the nerve inside may be damaged.

3. Swollen or Tender Gums

Swelling near a specific tooth, sometimes with a small pimple-like bump on the gum, usually points to an infection at the tooth's root.

4. Tooth Discoloration

A tooth that's turned noticeably darker or greyish compared to its neighbours can mean the internal nerve tissue has died.

5. Pain When Chewing or Touching the Tooth

If biting down or even light pressure causes sharp pain, the ligaments around the root may already be inflamed from infection.

"Root canal treatment has a reputation for being painful — but with modern anaesthesia and technique, most patients say it feels no different from getting a filling."

If any of these signs sound familiar, don't wait for the pain to get worse. A quick check-up can confirm whether a root canal is needed — and the sooner it's treated, the simpler and more comfortable the procedure will be.
