Braces vs Clear Aligners: Which Is Right for You?

Three patients, three lifestyles, three different right answers.

Braces and clear aligners comparison

"Braces or aligners?" is the wrong first question. The right first question is: what does your life actually look like day to day? Over the years, I've found almost every patient fits one of three profiles. See which one sounds like you.

The Teenager

Fourteen years old, plays sports twice a week, and — let's be honest — not always reliable about wearing something they could simply take out and forget about. For this profile, traditional metal braces usually win. They work continuously with zero daily compliance required, they handle complex bite corrections well, and there's no risk of a retainer being left in a school bag.

The Working Professional

Client meetings, video calls, a packed calendar — and a strong preference that nobody notices anything different about their smile mid-treatment. This is the classic clear aligner patient. Aligners are removable for meals and photos, virtually invisible in conversation, and for mild-to-moderate crowding, deliver results in a similar timeframe to braces with far less social friction.

The Perfectionist

Wants the most precise, predictable result possible and is happy to follow instructions exactly. Here, the answer depends on the case, not the personality: if the correction is complex — rotated teeth, significant overbite, jaw alignment — braces still offer more predictable control. If the case is mild to moderate, aligners planned with 3D digital mapping can be just as precise, with the added benefit of previewing the final smile before treatment even begins.

"The best straightening option isn't the newest one or the most popular one — it's the one you'll actually stick with for the next 12 to 18 months."

Every mouth is different, and the honest answer usually needs a proper bite assessment before it's final. But if you recognised yourself in one of the three profiles above, you already have a strong starting point for that conversation.
