Five popular whitening claims — cross-examined, with a verdict for each.
Nothing generates more confident misinformation in my clinic than teeth whitening. Every patient has heard a story from a cousin, a colleague, or the internet. So let's do this properly — like a trial. Five claims, the evidence for each, and a clear verdict.
The evidence: Professional whitening gels use controlled concentrations of peroxide that lift stains from within the enamel's pores without dissolving the enamel itself. The temporary sensitivity some patients feel is the tooth's nerve reacting, not enamel damage.
Verdict: MYTH — when done under professional supervision, at the correct concentration and duration.
The evidence: Teeth continue to absorb pigment from tea, coffee, turmeric and tobacco every single day after treatment. Most patients see noticeable results for 6–12 months before a light top-up is worth considering.
Verdict: MYTH — whitening is long-lasting, not permanent.
The evidence: Charcoal is abrasive — it can scrub away surface stains, but it does nothing to the deeper pigment inside the tooth, and daily use can wear down enamel over time, making teeth look more yellow, not less, as the underlying dentin shows through.
Verdict: MYTH — and potentially counterproductive long-term.
The evidence: This one holds up. In-chair treatments use higher-concentration gel activated under controlled conditions, producing visible results — up to 8 shades brighter — in a single session, versus 1–2 weeks for a take-home kit.
Verdict: FACT.
The evidence: Whitening gel only affects natural enamel — it has no effect on porcelain crowns, veneers, or composite fillings. This is exactly why we discuss the shade of existing dental work before starting any whitening plan.
Verdict: FACT.
"Two out of five claims held up under evidence. That's exactly why I never let a patient start whitening based on something they read online — the details matter more than the headline."

Whitening is safe, effective, and far less dramatic than the myths suggest — as long as it's done professionally, with your existing dental work factored in, and with realistic expectations about how long the results will last.
